environments are quiet. Noisy chillers, especially at part load,
can interrupt daily activities and create complaints. Johnson
Controls developed the OptiSound control for YORK chillers
to greatly reduce chiller sound levels.
The OptiSound control, available on model YMC², YK, YK-EP,
YD, YST and CYK centrifugal chillers, is a patented combination
of hardware and software that reduces operational sound
and vibration levels, expands the chiller operating range,
and improves chiller performance and reliability. OptiSound
control delivers the quietest centrifugal chiller products on
the market from 215 to 6,000 TR (755-21,100 kW).

Minimize gas fl ow noise
Chillers create sound as the refrigerant fl ows through the system.
During part load, the fl ow can separate from the walls of the
compressor’s diffuser. This condition, known as “diffuser stall,”
substantially increases sound and vibration. The OptiSound control
continuously monitors the characteristics of the compressor-discharge
gas and optimizes the diffuser to minimize gas fl ow disruptions.
This innovative technology decreases the operating sound levels of
the chiller an average of 7 dBA and up to 13 dBA on the largest models.
The human ear recognizes a change of 10 dBA as being half as loud.
Therefore, with OptiSound, the chiller sound is perceived as approximately
half the sound of a similar chiller without this unique technology.
Improving performance and reliability
In addition to noise suppression, the OptiSound control provides an
expanded operating range. It improves performance and reliability
because diffuser-gas stall is minimized at off-design operation,
particularly conditions of very low load combined with little or no
condenser water relief. This gives the chiller better effi ciency over an
expanded range of operation.
The technology improves system reliability, allowing units to continue
operation with higher condenser water temperature than design. For
example, a cooling tower or condenser pump problem may result in
reduced fl ow or elevated temperatures. But a chiller with OptiSound
control will continue to operate while other units are in stall, surge,
or shut down.

MATCHED COMPONENTS MAXIMIZE EFFICIENCY
Actual chiller efficiency cannot be determined by analyzing the theoretical efficiency of
any one chiller component. It requires a specific combination of heat exchanger, compressor,
and motor performance to achieve the lowest system kW/ton. YORK chiller technology
matches chiller system components to provide maximum chiller efficiency under
actual – not just theoretical – operating conditions.
REAL-WORLD ENERGY PERFORMANCE
Johnson Controls pioneered the concept of “Real-World Energy” to illustrate the energysaving
potential of focusing on chiller performance during off-design conditions. Off-design
is not only part load, but full load operation as well, with reduced entering condenser
water temperatures (ECWTs). This is where chillers operate 99% of the time, and where
operating costs add up.
YORK centrifugal chillers are the only chillers designed to operate on a continuous basis
with cold ECWT and full condenser flow at all load points, taking full advantage of Real-
World conditions. This type of operation benefits the cooling tower as well by reducing the
cycling of the fan motor and ensuring good coverage of the cooling fill.

1.   YORK RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

 

In December 2004, to provide high-quality and competitive air conditioning products and refrigeration equipments to the Asia-Pacific region and on the parts of the world, YORK set up the YORK Asia Pacific research and development center in

Wuxi.

The center has the most advanced software systems, highly qualified professionals, and various test equipments and systems. The air-cooled test bench, unique in China and the largest in the

Asia-Pacific region, which has complete spring base for the equipment vibration test, can lower the noise to 20db by means of muffle devices. It also can carry out the working environment temperature simulation test by changing the indoor temperature via air conditioning and refrigeration system.

Since its establishment, the R&D center is dedicated to development efficient, energy saving, environment friendly products with independent intellectual property and unique technology and to the research of thermal conductivity, noise vibration and reliability to meet the needs of refrigeration &air conditioning in China and even the entire Asia-Pacific region.
